BLOG TOUR: (Review & Giveaway) Freeks by Amanda Hocking!

Welcome to Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Sideshow, where necromancy, magical visions, and pyrokinesis are more than just part of the act…

Mara has always longed for a normal life in a normal town where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future. Instead, she roams from place to place, cleaning the tiger cage while her friends perform supernatural feats every night.

When the struggling sideshow is miraculously offered the money they need if they set up camp in Caudry, Louisiana, Mara meets local-boy Gabe…and a normal life has never been more appealing.

But before long, performers begin disappearing and bodes are found mauled by an invisible beast. Mara realizes that there’s a sinister presence lurking in the town with its sights set on getting rid of the sideshow freeks. In order to unravel the truth before the attacker kills everyone Mara holds dear, she has seven days to take control of a power she didn’t know she was capable of—one that could change her future forever.

Bestselling author Amanda Hocking draws readers inside the dark and mysterious world of Freeks.

I’ve been a fan of Amanda’s since I read her Trylle series and I’ve been dying to read more by her for quite a while. As soon as I found out about this release, I couldn’t request it fast enough and was stalking my mailman for weeks straight. Anything that has to do with traveling sideshows, or a circus, has me sold on it right off the bat. Freeks has been one of my top anticipated releases of 2016 and this world was a beautiful breath of fresh air.
This book takes place in the 1980’s over the course of 10 days and it tore my heart out in the first 100 pages. There was some brutality and darkness that I was not expecting but I most definitely enjoyed.
This story follows Mara, whose mother can speak to the dead and they both work at a traveling sideshow. As soon as they make it to Louisiana, bad things start to happen to the performers and it causes friction between them and the local town. She soon meets a local guy, Gabe, and she learns to juggle romance while trying to figure out what was going on around them. I wasn’t really on board with their romance until after halfway in. I thought Mara jumped to conclusions too quickly for her own good and their relationship felt too insta love for my taste. They both eventually won me over and I couldn’t wait to see where they would end up.
I was kept guessing most of the time but figured out some things before they were revealed. I thought the bad guy was defeated much too easily and it left a lot to be desired. Sadly, it was not believable.
Other than that, I had a bad feeling in my stomach with every turn of the page due to the dark atmosphere of the story. I was unquestionably enthralled and I loved seeing the gorgeous tarot card illustrations throughout the pages. But one of the most disappointing aspects of this world was that it was a standalone. I need more of these characters, especially since the way it ended!! That ending was the most perfect thing I could ask for and I really hope Amanda answers my wishes!!

4/5 stars!
