Review: Evanescent by Gabriella LePore

*Copy provided by author in exchange for an honest review*
This was my first read by Gabriella and I found it to be quite entertaining. We follow three guys and our main character, Bronwen, as they try to protect each other while one of them is being hunted.
I thought Felix, one of the guys, was hilarious! His character was the one that captured my attention since page one. His personality was utterly amazing to witness and his heart was definitely something to appreciate. In my opinion, I felt like his character was more thought out than the other ones.
Bronwen was just ‘eh’ to me. I didn’t feel any connection to her and her actions grew to be a bit predictable.
Loki was adorable and Alistar just rubbed me off as a quiet guy for some reason. The bond between the guys was beautiful to be a part of but I still felt like Felix outshone all of them. I have no idea if that was Gabriella’s intention but it is what it is.
I also was NOT on board with the small ‘romance’ part of the story. It’s a sad day when I write those words but it’s the truth. It wasn’t as subtle as I would’ve loved it to have been; It came too suddenly and I couldn’t believe any of it. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t see it.
Another thing that didn’t rub me the right way was that the three guys were known to be incredibly powerful but I honestly didn’t see it. I would’ve loved to WITNESS their incredible power instead of being told about it. We got to see a little bit of it but it wasn’t enough to sway me. I just felt like it was a huge cop out.
Now for the positives:
The format in this book was outstanding! If I wasn’t so smitten with Felix, the format itself would’ve been the one making turn the pages. The one thing that had me almost giving this book 3 stars was that spectacular ending. I bow down to Gabriella for going in that direction with her story. It’s something I rarely see in the books I read and it came to a huge blow to me. It made me shed some tears and I don’t regret any of it. The twists we encountered through this story were amazing and I never saw them coming.
All in all, I will definitely be reading more by Gabriella in the future.

2.6/5 stars.

Review: The Deadbringer by E.M. Markoff

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00005]

*ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review*
“The people act according to their own selfish interests, using tragedy and pity and religion as weapons and shields.”
This book mainly follows, Kira Vidal. He’s one of the last Deadbringers in this world and one of the most kind-hearted characters I’ve ever met. He’s extremely loyal and would do whatever’s necessary to keep those he loves safe. I extremely enjoyed witnessing everything he did and thought. It hurt my heart to see him go through the things thrown his way but my appreciation grew every time he overcame them. I also may have had a slight crush on him every time he was in Death Mode (that’s what I call it, I don’t know what it’s really called). I didn’t care that he was a teenager. He just seems so badass and I am in awe of the things he’s able to do. I also have a great respect for his beliefs and his way of living.
This story’s told in a few point of views and I can honestly say that I didn’t have a favorite. Markoff managed to create such believable and complex characters that I was looking forward to every other POV as much as I was looking forward to Kira’s.
I’ve always had a deep love for necromancy so this book spoke to my soul in many different ways. There’s the dark and the fantasy, two things I love immensely, and even more when they’re put together.
This story was told beautifully; Markoff never dumped loads of information at a time on us and I appreciated it since I was trying to overcome a slump. I loved the pace of how she revealed things. She went for what would have the most impact and it payed off. I felt my eyes bulging out of my head not once, but a few times, and I enjoyed every second of it. Also, I will take a moment to say that I appreciate the gore! It wasn’t excessive but I was definitely looking forward to the next gory scene. I was also caught by surprise so many times that I lost count. I loved how I didn’t know what to expect next; It wasn’t predictable and that is one of the best things I could say about a book.
I’ve never followed a journey so closely as I did with this book. Usually, I forget about a map as soon as I read the first word but I kept turning back to it in order to see where the characters were headed next.
This book had so many unique aspects but one that I absolutely grew obsessed with were the symbols on top of each chapter. It took me a couple chapters to form a connection but when I did, I was madly impressed. Each POV has its own symbol that allowed us to find out who we’re following on that chapter without being told.
The world Markoff created was nothing short of amazing and intricate; I can’t wait to uncover more of what it has to offer. Every one of the characters had their own badass trait, even the ones without their own POV. I loved meeting the different type of beings the world was responsible of birthing and I was always looking forward to witnessing what abilities they possessed.
The reason I didn’t give this 5 stars was because it took me a little while to get a full grasp of the world. At times I felt like I was treading water because I didn’t know what some words meant until their definition was reveled later on in the book. (I’m not the type to bring out Google in the middle of a book so I don’t blame the story). I also didn’t grow attached to the characters, as incredible and intriguing as they were, until around halfway in. I’m proud to say that I am definitely attached to most of the characters we followed.
All except Teemo. I did NOT like her at all. She felt more modern to me when compared to the rest of the characters. Talking about names, I absolutely loved the unique ones Markoff gave all of her characters.
I honestly forgot this was a debut novel until I sat to type this review. This book did not feel like one since it had all the right things, and more.
Also, THAT ENDING!! Gah! I can’t contain my longing for the sequel! I can’t wait to see where the revelations are headed… I need more!!!

4.5 stars!

This May, I was lucky enough to have been selected to not only represent one but TWO book box subscriptions! This is the first time I have been selected as a rep for anything and I am bursting with gratitude towards the beautiful people who made it happen.

I want to start by talking about the Go Indie Now subscription. This box was created by an amazing indie author, Ashley Marie Nestler. This box is specifically targeted for those who love and appreciate the written word no matter who publishes it. (Like me!) If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know what a huge indie lover I am. Indie books are what I usually read, more than popular books, and I am absolutely happy to have found this box! It’s perfect for my tasted and I couldn’t have asked for a better box to represent.

You can find Ashley on:

Okay, okay, now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the unboxing:

The theme for this month was Fantasy! The box for May included not one, but two books by the author, Michael E. Dellert. They were beautifully wrapped up in this soft red bow that tore my heart to pieces to unravel. I secretly kept it like that until I actually HAD to post the covers on my Instagram. Don’t judge me.

You can find Micahel on:

These are the beautiful covers and I can’t get over how amazing the details in them are! The cover artist definitely knows what they are doing and I’m a happy owner of this amazing artwork. They themselves seem to promise an epic adventure with badass battle scenes and I can’t wait to get around to reading them!

The box also included a postcard of the cover art for the first book along with a physical map of the world these books take place in. The books have the map printed on them as well but this was an amazing surprise! You actually get to hold the map in your hands and it’s marvelous.

Ashley included a beautiful business card for the subscription as well.

Now, to introduce my FAVORITE item in this box, apart from the books themselves.

The scent pack!!!

I was obsessed with the amazing aroma that hit me as soon as I opened this package. I frantically looked through the items to find out what was responsible for this obsession and I found this:

This is what the bag looks like from the back. There’s so many scent ‘beans'(?) in there and I literally want to spread them all around the house so everything smells just like them. I’m obsessed guys and I’m pretty sure that whenever I have a job again, I’m buying loads of these. Different scents too because why not?

The next item I’m pretty obsessed with are these beautiful sword earrings! A part of me is pretty sad about receiving these since I can’t wear them due to my ears being stretched but I might have to wear them after I make them into a necklace or something. Anyway, I love them and I am so happy to own them!

Now to finish things off, here’s a picture I took of all the beautiful items together:

REP BOX UNBOXING: Fantasy and Sci Fi Books!

The second box subscription that was generous enough to choose me as one of their first representatives was Fantasy and Sci-Fi Books!!

I’ve been seeing this beautiful box around booktube and bookstagram a lot and I’ve been in love with the items from first glance. They always include a new YA release and I was excited to see what they would choose. I’m proud to be a rep for them and their box didn’t disappoint!

You can find them on:

Now for the unboxing:

The theme for the month of May was: Fantasy! I am a complete fantasy-holic and proud of it! The genre is up there with romance for me; they share the #1 spot in my heart and I don’t know if they will ever be trumped from their glory.

The book included in this box was The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi! I’ve been seeing this beautiful book around bookstagram and I can’t believe it’s now in my possession. I can’t wait to get around to reading it!

This book came with a beautiful matching & SIGNED bookmark as well:

The next item in the box were this beautiful Star-Touched Queen inspired temporary tattoos. I’ve already worn some and I can’t wait to wear the rest.

They’re so beautiful!

This box also included a pair of blue and red Wonder Woman socks! These look so beautiful and comfortable but I will be giving them away soon with a couple other items as well.

Stay tuned for that!

The next item in the box was this beautiful magnet of The Butterfly Code by Sue Wyshynski! That cover is gorgeous and definitely intriguing. I’ll be adding the book to my TBR on it alone:

And now for my favorite item in this box, beside the book:

The anklet!!

I’ve already posted a picture on my Instagram with me wearing it and I mentioned that I will never take it off., which is true! I can’t remember the last time I owned an anklet and I was pretty excited to receive one in this box. It’s a double chain anklet with one chain containing a row of stars, tying in perfectly with the book:

There was some hair bling included as well. I’m slightly confused as to how to wear these (even after reading the instructions) but I might give them away with the Wonder Woman socks if I can’t figure it out.

They look fun to wear though:

Now for the picture I took of all the items together:

COVER REVEAL & GIVEAWAY: Crystal Crowned (Air Awakens #5) by Elise Kova!!

I have been waiting for this cover for SO long, that it feels surreal to see it out in the world already. I tear every single time I look upon this perfection. If you love these characters as much as I do, then you know why!

It’s just so overwhelming to think back on how far these incredible and beloved characters have come. They continue to grow with every step they take and it makes me so unbelievably proud! The covers do an amazing job at depicting said developments and they will forever be my favorite covers in the history of covers because of that.

This cover promises an epic and brutal last installment in this to-die-for series and I don’t think I will ever be ready for what’s in store for us!! Either way, I will continue to count down the days until we can all have the physical book in our hands!!

I think it goes without saying that this cover is my ultimate favorite out of all of them… And that’s saying something considering water is my obsession…

A word from Elise Kova about her thoughts on the Covers’ Symbolism So Far:

Six months ago, almost to the day, Air Awakens came out. It was my debut novel as an independent author, no publisher and no agent behind me, and I had no idea what would come of it. Now, six months later, I can’t believe I’m revealing the cover on the fourth book of the Air Awakens series.

I say every cover is my favorite, because it gets harder and harder to pick. Each of the covers, in their own way, has been perfect for the book they belong with. My cover artist, Merilliza Chan, is amazing at taking direction and incorporating my suggestions.

Part of why each cover is perfect is because there are little hints, teasers, and call-outs to the story within. Without giving too many spoilers, here’s a couple notes on each of the Air Awakens covers so far!

Air Awakens

First off, notice how Vhalla’s sash is black. In the book, the sash that goes with her apprentice robes is cerulean. This, combined with her robes slowly turning black around the back of the cover is indicative of sorcery making a mark on her. But she hasn’t yet committed, she has yet to don all-black robes. The wind in her hair and sense of movement is a call-out to her affinity. The book in her hands, is representative of three things: her work in the library, the book she exchanges notes in, and the book she brings to the garden. Which, speaking of, the roses around her… well, if you’ve read the book you know what, or who, those are meant to symbolize. But I told Meril I wanted something ominous, something wicked about them. And the thorns going through them were perfect!

Fire Falling

Here is the first cover we see our dark prince on. Fire Falling is named after three incidents in the book… When Aldrik falls to his knees before Vhalla in the Crossroads, the Rites of the FALLen in the Crossroads for another, and the end of the book. Since two of the three aspects of the title of the book related to Aldrik it was only natural that he had to be on the cover. In Fire Falling, Aldrik is beginning to function as a guiding force for Vhalla and, on the cover, he’s looking over his shoulder at her. He can’t openly admit to their association. Vhalla’s eyes are glowing orange and she’s alight, immersed in flame. This was done to symbolize their Bond and Joining. That not only can his flames not harm her, but that he is connected on a mental and magical level. She is also wearing the armor Aldrik crafted for her.

Earth’s End

Now, the symbolism is beginning to get heavy. Vhalla is alone again on the cover, venturing into the wilderness. She’s almost facing the camera, symbolizing how she is growing into her own and becoming a more realized person. In the sky above her is a fire bird. We literally see this formed in the book, but it also is symbolic of a phoenix, rising from its own ashes. I think this works for Vhalla and Aldrik in their own ways through Earth’s End. The cloak she’s wearing is the one she receives from Tim with slash marks. The watch in her hand was gifted to her. And, in her other hand, we see a special sort of magic… Finally, one other note… Carved into a tree that’s on the back of printed books is a symbol – that is actually the symbol of Shaldan!

My review:

*ARC provided in exchange for an honest review*
“Home had become where he was.”
This book has to be my favorite of this series so far. Oh. My. World. How could 300+ pages be my life yet my unavoidable ruin?
Earth’s End picks up right where Fire Falling leaves off (cue in ugly sobs). Fire Falling left in the most unbelievable and world-breaking of cliffhangers. You could imagine my grief when I knew my beloved characters were in the brink of immense suffering yet I couldn’t read about it until months later.
It’s an honor to be in Vhalla Yarl’s, our beautiful and strong main character, head and witness how far she has come from book one. Her character development keeps leaving me stunned and so unbelievably proud of her. I can’t believe how amazing she deals with the terrible things thrown her way. I am pretty sure I would have lost my cool, or my life, the second I met the horrible Emperor in book one.
We were introduced to new characters and they where amazing, of course. I am officially obsessed with Jax!! That man can say and do no wrong. I hope I get to see much more from him in the future. I am immensely grateful for him since he got me to laugh even while my heart was breaking.
It goes without saying that the men in this series are phenomenal and unforgettable but nobody will ever, ever take Aldrik’s place in my heart. Not anybody in this series nor in any other. He has stolen every piece of me I have to give and I will never regret that. I am beyond scared but no matter how this series wraps up, I will be glad that I at least got to meet these wonderful characters. My life has definitely been better with them in it.
What I love most about said characters are the complexity. They feel so real that I feel horrible calling them ‘characters’. You think you know everything there is to know about them but it turns out that you know nothing. I was taken by surprise by so many things and I am still reeling over them. No matter how perfect these characters are to me, they are tremendously flawed and it breaks my heart not being able to help them find happiness.
There is a war raging inside of me. I don’t know what I want for these characters I have grown to love with all my being. I want them to get everything they want since it’s the least they deserve, but we all know that never comes without a sacrifice. And AHH!!! Sacrifices are NOT what I want for them.
If you’ve read my previous reviews for Elise, then you know how terrified I am of her and her writing. My heart has been in her hands since book one and it hasn’t been a pretty ride. I’m devastatingly invested in these characters. If they are chased to the edge of their sanity, they take me with them. I can’t tell you how many tears I have shed for this series. From the moment I opened the first cover, I was an absolute mess.
I always have to read these books in my room so nobody gets to see how brutal they are on my heart. This book drove me insane. The roller coaster we witness in this story is nothing short than emotional. I couldn’t bathe in the joy some scenes brought because in the back of my mind, I was waiting for the shoe to drop. It kept getting worse and worse and I don’t know if I will be able to make it to the last book. Kova weaves such an intricate plot line that keeps breaking me in ways I never knew I could be broken.
Also, I absolutely lost it when the clues in the cover made sense. I will never look at a pocket watch the same again. Every little thing about this series will haunt me forever.
I couldn’t put this book down for the life of me. I kept trying to take breaks because I couldn’t stop crying. I always gave into it a second later. I couldn’t stop shaking and the most horrible of feelings in my stomach stayed with me until the very end.
This series… will be the death of me. … THAT ENDING IS KILLING ME!!! Over an over again, I can’t believe Kova would do such a thing to me. If there is one thing you must know about her, is that she doesn’t hold back. At all.
Here is to the next 4 months of crying myself to sleep while wanting more but being terrified of finding out more. There isn’t a word in existence that can fully explain what this world has done to me.
“I wanted to give you the promise of my minutes, my hopes, my days…”

For anyone who knows me, I MUST have music when I’m writing. In fact, it was the song Clarity, by Zedd, that was the initial inspiration for the entire Air Awakens series!
