I wanted to tell him all my secrets, but he became one of them instead.

Chloe Rivers never thought she would keep secrets from her best friend. Then again, she never imagined she would fall in love with him either. When she finally reveals her feelings, rejection shatters her, rendering her vulnerable and sending her straight into the destructive arms of the wrong guy.

Gavin Rhodes never saw the betrayal coming. It crushes him. Chloe has always been his forbidden fantasy–sweet, tempting, and beautiful. But when the opportunity finally presents itself, he makes the biggest mistake of all and denies her.

Now it’s too late . . .

Four years after a devastating tragedy, Chloe and Gavin’s world’s collide and they find their lives entangling once again. Haunted by the past, they are forced to come to terms with all that has transpired to find the peace they deserve. Except they can’t seem to get near each other without combatting an intense emotional connection that brings them right back to where it all started . . . their childhood treehouse.

Chloe still holds her secrets close, but this time she isn’t the only one with something to hide. Can their deep-rooted connection survive the destruction of innocence?

ICYMI Author Spotlight: Laura Spinella!

Name: Laura Spinella (pen name L. J. Wilson)

Genre/s you write: Romantic Suspense, Women’s Fiction

Birthday: 10-25

Number of books out: 5

-What are you currently working on?

Right now I’m working on Ghost Gifts II—no official title yet! This is book two in the Ghost Gifts trilogy. I’m about half way through the initial draft, which means I’m consuming a lot of wine and wishing I’d paid more attention in math class.

No. Seriously, we’ll get there. First drafts are just the first seven rings of hell in book writing.

-How do you name your characters? What inspires it?

Ah, a happier question! What does inspire a character’s name? I’m an extremist when it comes to picking out the perfect name—well, perfect in my head. *Author note: I actually had an Amazon reviewer title her review: “I hate the name Aubrey!” Well, first rule of book writing, there’s no pleasing everyone.

Either a character’s name pops right into my head and it sticks: Aubrey Ellis (Ghost Gifts), Flynn (Beautiful Disaster), Aidan Royce (Perfect Timing), Rob Van Doren (Unstrung)

OR, this happens:

I wring my hands over a name until everyone I live with is name hunting too, if only to end the torment. Levi St John (Ghost Gifts)—the Levi part came easy, but his last name took forever. I think part of this is because I was now linking his name with Aubrey’s name. Since he is her love interest, it’s extra pressure and they have to “go together.”

One night I was out at a restaurant with my family and the subject came up again. My husband said he spoke with a client that day in London; his last name was St John. Since I’d already decided Levi’s father was British, it seemed like serendipity.

-What should we look for on previous/next releases?

Love this question!

Since I write under a pen name as well as my own name, I’m always excited for a chance to talk up my Clairmont Series novels. These are slightly steamier reads, but I think the stories are as intense as my mainstream Laura Spinella novels. The Mission, book two in the series came out in May. I know it earned a glowing 6/5 star review here!

I love writing the Clairmont stories. But these are essentially self-pub titles, so they’re a little trickier to connect with an audience.

That said, readers who enjoy hot romance would LOVE the Clairmont men—Alec, Aaron, Jake & Troy, as well as their tough but vulnerable sister, Honor. I hope to have book three out soon. L. J. Wilson has her own website, so please pop over and take a peek at these smokin’ hot, smart heroes, whose abs and stories will keep you turning pages!

-If you could switch places with one of your characters, who would it be?

Why did I choose this question? Umm…

Male characters, I’d have to switch it up with Aidan Royce in Perfect Timing. What the heck, he’s a rock star. Who doesn’t want to live that life?

Some days I wouldn’t mind being Ghost Gifts Aubrey—to have such a fantastic psychic gift. But that also comes with a lot of burden. Writing her can be exhausting. I can’t imagine living her life—well, actually, I suppose I can. Ultimately, I’d like to be Olivia Klein, my protagonist in Unstrung. I get her. She’s unpredictable, talented, giving in ways that matter to her, and doesn’t give a damn what the universe thinks. I could never master the last one, so I’m envious of her.

-Where are you from?

Great question. When I speak to people they’re forever concluding that I’m from: the South, Pennsylvania, New England, somewhere in the Midwest, or I could be from California. I’m actually from Long Island—the one accent nobody ever pegs me for! I consider myself an East Coast girl; I haven’t lived on the Island in many years, but I’ve never lived west of Boston either!

-How does an average day in your life look like?

Oh, you mean, like, from hour to hour? On most days, I write from about 7 a.m. to early afternoon. That’s pretty basic and boring—unless you catch me on a day where there’s a lot of out loud swearing. Some afternoons I work with a web developer, AuthorBytes. It’s a part time gig that I love; it keeps me in touch with “real people.” The best days are rainy days where I might spruce up and change pajama pants. Pajama pants are the secret decoder ring of writers.

-Are you married? Kids? or Planning on it?

Very. On both. I’ve been married for a l-o-n-g time to a great guy from Long Island and we have three technically adult children: an RN, law school student & musical theatre major (that was my brag moment). They all live at home, and we cohabitate well. If you can handle large doses of sarcasm, you can survive the Spinella house.

 -What is your guilty pleasure?

Movies that would probably make you cringe. I love space movies—Apollo 13 and The Martian are two of my favorites. Why? I think because they’re about survival. You have to use your wits, plus design and implement a logical yet complex step-by-step strategy, all while keeping the audience highly entertained. It’s very much like writing a book.

If you love a love story, I’ve got you covered. Check out my first two books, Beautiful Disaster &Perfecting Timing. If you want romance and serious steam, please stop by the Clairmont house, located at L. J. In the mood for romantic suspense? Then Ghost Gifts, a #1 bestseller might be the ticket for you.

As you can see, I’m that hybrid author you’ve heard tell of. I have a very cool gig going with Montlake—they publish the Ghost Gifts books, as well as Unstrung. It’s out in February, just in time for a cozy winter read! I also LOVE my Clairmont Series Novels, Ruby Ink and The Mission, which are a joint venture with my publishing partner.

I’m most grateful for the opportunity to share my books with readers. Thank you especially to blog spots like The Bookish Crypt and readers like Cassandra. I can’t overstate their importance to authors and book publishing in general.

I hope you’ll check out my novels. There’s a little something for everyone, no matter what genre you’re into. Except steam punk—I don’t know how to write that.

Many thanks for the chance to chat today! Wishing everyone a great read this weekend! Come visit me on any of the social media sites below! I LOVE to hear from readers!

COVER REVEAL & GIVEAWAY: Crystal Crowned (Air Awakens #5) by Elise Kova!!

I have been waiting for this cover for SO long, that it feels surreal to see it out in the world already. I tear every single time I look upon this perfection. If you love these characters as much as I do, then you know why!

It’s just so overwhelming to think back on how far these incredible and beloved characters have come. They continue to grow with every step they take and it makes me so unbelievably proud! The covers do an amazing job at depicting said developments and they will forever be my favorite covers in the history of covers because of that.

This cover promises an epic and brutal last installment in this to-die-for series and I don’t think I will ever be ready for what’s in store for us!! Either way, I will continue to count down the days until we can all have the physical book in our hands!!

I think it goes without saying that this cover is my ultimate favorite out of all of them… And that’s saying something considering water is my obsession…

A word from Elise Kova about her thoughts on the Covers’ Symbolism So Far:

Six months ago, almost to the day, Air Awakens came out. It was my debut novel as an independent author, no publisher and no agent behind me, and I had no idea what would come of it. Now, six months later, I can’t believe I’m revealing the cover on the fourth book of the Air Awakens series.

I say every cover is my favorite, because it gets harder and harder to pick. Each of the covers, in their own way, has been perfect for the book they belong with. My cover artist, Merilliza Chan, is amazing at taking direction and incorporating my suggestions.

Part of why each cover is perfect is because there are little hints, teasers, and call-outs to the story within. Without giving too many spoilers, here’s a couple notes on each of the Air Awakens covers so far!

Air Awakens

First off, notice how Vhalla’s sash is black. In the book, the sash that goes with her apprentice robes is cerulean. This, combined with her robes slowly turning black around the back of the cover is indicative of sorcery making a mark on her. But she hasn’t yet committed, she has yet to don all-black robes. The wind in her hair and sense of movement is a call-out to her affinity. The book in her hands, is representative of three things: her work in the library, the book she exchanges notes in, and the book she brings to the garden. Which, speaking of, the roses around her… well, if you’ve read the book you know what, or who, those are meant to symbolize. But I told Meril I wanted something ominous, something wicked about them. And the thorns going through them were perfect!

Fire Falling

Here is the first cover we see our dark prince on. Fire Falling is named after three incidents in the book… When Aldrik falls to his knees before Vhalla in the Crossroads, the Rites of the FALLen in the Crossroads for another, and the end of the book. Since two of the three aspects of the title of the book related to Aldrik it was only natural that he had to be on the cover. In Fire Falling, Aldrik is beginning to function as a guiding force for Vhalla and, on the cover, he’s looking over his shoulder at her. He can’t openly admit to their association. Vhalla’s eyes are glowing orange and she’s alight, immersed in flame. This was done to symbolize their Bond and Joining. That not only can his flames not harm her, but that he is connected on a mental and magical level. She is also wearing the armor Aldrik crafted for her.

Earth’s End

Now, the symbolism is beginning to get heavy. Vhalla is alone again on the cover, venturing into the wilderness. She’s almost facing the camera, symbolizing how she is growing into her own and becoming a more realized person. In the sky above her is a fire bird. We literally see this formed in the book, but it also is symbolic of a phoenix, rising from its own ashes. I think this works for Vhalla and Aldrik in their own ways through Earth’s End. The cloak she’s wearing is the one she receives from Tim with slash marks. The watch in her hand was gifted to her. And, in her other hand, we see a special sort of magic… Finally, one other note… Carved into a tree that’s on the back of printed books is a symbol – that is actually the symbol of Shaldan!

My review:

*ARC provided in exchange for an honest review*
“Home had become where he was.”
This book has to be my favorite of this series so far. Oh. My. World. How could 300+ pages be my life yet my unavoidable ruin?
Earth’s End picks up right where Fire Falling leaves off (cue in ugly sobs). Fire Falling left in the most unbelievable and world-breaking of cliffhangers. You could imagine my grief when I knew my beloved characters were in the brink of immense suffering yet I couldn’t read about it until months later.
It’s an honor to be in Vhalla Yarl’s, our beautiful and strong main character, head and witness how far she has come from book one. Her character development keeps leaving me stunned and so unbelievably proud of her. I can’t believe how amazing she deals with the terrible things thrown her way. I am pretty sure I would have lost my cool, or my life, the second I met the horrible Emperor in book one.
We were introduced to new characters and they where amazing, of course. I am officially obsessed with Jax!! That man can say and do no wrong. I hope I get to see much more from him in the future. I am immensely grateful for him since he got me to laugh even while my heart was breaking.
It goes without saying that the men in this series are phenomenal and unforgettable but nobody will ever, ever take Aldrik’s place in my heart. Not anybody in this series nor in any other. He has stolen every piece of me I have to give and I will never regret that. I am beyond scared but no matter how this series wraps up, I will be glad that I at least got to meet these wonderful characters. My life has definitely been better with them in it.
What I love most about said characters are the complexity. They feel so real that I feel horrible calling them ‘characters’. You think you know everything there is to know about them but it turns out that you know nothing. I was taken by surprise by so many things and I am still reeling over them. No matter how perfect these characters are to me, they are tremendously flawed and it breaks my heart not being able to help them find happiness.
There is a war raging inside of me. I don’t know what I want for these characters I have grown to love with all my being. I want them to get everything they want since it’s the least they deserve, but we all know that never comes without a sacrifice. And AHH!!! Sacrifices are NOT what I want for them.
If you’ve read my previous reviews for Elise, then you know how terrified I am of her and her writing. My heart has been in her hands since book one and it hasn’t been a pretty ride. I’m devastatingly invested in these characters. If they are chased to the edge of their sanity, they take me with them. I can’t tell you how many tears I have shed for this series. From the moment I opened the first cover, I was an absolute mess.
I always have to read these books in my room so nobody gets to see how brutal they are on my heart. This book drove me insane. The roller coaster we witness in this story is nothing short than emotional. I couldn’t bathe in the joy some scenes brought because in the back of my mind, I was waiting for the shoe to drop. It kept getting worse and worse and I don’t know if I will be able to make it to the last book. Kova weaves such an intricate plot line that keeps breaking me in ways I never knew I could be broken.
Also, I absolutely lost it when the clues in the cover made sense. I will never look at a pocket watch the same again. Every little thing about this series will haunt me forever.
I couldn’t put this book down for the life of me. I kept trying to take breaks because I couldn’t stop crying. I always gave into it a second later. I couldn’t stop shaking and the most horrible of feelings in my stomach stayed with me until the very end.
This series… will be the death of me. … THAT ENDING IS KILLING ME!!! Over an over again, I can’t believe Kova would do such a thing to me. If there is one thing you must know about her, is that she doesn’t hold back. At all.
Here is to the next 4 months of crying myself to sleep while wanting more but being terrified of finding out more. There isn’t a word in existence that can fully explain what this world has done to me.
“I wanted to give you the promise of my minutes, my hopes, my days…”

7/5 stars!

A word from Elise about her playlist:

For anyone who knows me, I MUST have music when I’m writing. In fact, it was the song Clarity, by Zedd, that was the initial inspiration for the entire Air Awakens series! Music helps me get “in the zone” and then find my groove again when I have to stop. Needless to say, I have full-on playlists devoted to every book. To get people excited, and to be used while reading, here is the full playlist for Earth’s End, in order, conveniently made in YouTube!
